What Is A Group Of Ladybugs Called?

There are over 3,500 different species of ladybugs and most of them can be found in nearly every corner of the plant. When we typically see Ladybugs they are often seen on their own!

However, occasionally we may see them in small or large groups, especially when they’re looking for food. In fact, this behaviour is so common there’s even a name for this! It’s call loveliness!!

Why Do They Group Together?

Ladybugs will often be seen congregating in small or large groups on leaves, and flowers, the most common being rose plants. But why do these ladybugs group together? Well, ladybugs typically aggregate for three reasons: for food, to mate or to overwinter.

  • For Food: Ladybugs will usually group together when there is a ample supply of food!! One of their favourite foods are aphids and rose flower are know to have green aphids feeding on the stem underneath the flower!! So if you notice a large number of ladybugs in this area it’s highly likely they are eat the aphids.
  • Overwinter: Once temperatures start to drop, ladybugs will seek out places to huddle together for warmth. They often congregate in large numbers on the south-facing side of buildings, where they can take advantage of the sun’s heat during the winter months.
  • Mating Season: Every spring, ladybugs across the country come together to mate. For ladybugs, this is a crucial time of year, as their survival depends on reproduction. The process begins when the males arrive at gathering spots, where they emit pheromones to attract females.

If you find a group of ladybugs in your house, don’t panic! These insects are harmless and won’t cause any damage. However it’s probably a good idea to remove the ladybugs and place them outside!

However, there is no need to be afraid of a group of ladybugs. They pose no threat to humans and are actually quite harmless. In fact, ladybugs are beneficial to have around, as they help to eliminate harmful pests like green aphids on your rose plants!

If you do notice a lot of ladybugs gathering around your roses we recommend you leave them be as they will remove all the aphids from your roses which is a huge benefit for your plants.
